Ok so you are new to the business, and you want to have your own retail store. You are dazzled by the amount of choice and the huge amount of different suppliers offering you all kinds of goods and deals. Seems great doesn't it? the reality is many simply do not live up to their claims, and often if your new to the business you want to give up and pack it all in, and feel what a load of wasted time.
The truth is though this is a great business and a great industry! Profits can be made, you just have to be careful and choose the right supplier for you and someone you can trust. There are ways in which you can make sure you don't fall foul of the con men that swarm after newbies, and I will list them below.
1. Do your homework, find the brands you most want to carry,and then there are a number of ways of finding a reliable, and trustworthy wholesaler/dropshipper. Either by contacting the brand themselves and ask, or by asking the wholesalers who carry the brand some questions and by asking for references from customers who they have dealt with for over a year.
(Let's face it if someone is prepared to use a distributor for over a year, and would be happy to recommend them they must be doing something right!)
2. Check the address they use is a commercial property, ours is a commercial property, and we have a loading bay and office. Previously part of the property was a beauty shop. You can get that information off the council I believe. Don't be fooled by Unit 3, Ejit Lane, Great Yarns, for example. One of my customers was, and when I checked with the local estate agent was told there was no industrial units or warehouses in that cul de sac, as it was all terraced houses! This "wholesaler" left several of our customers really badly down and wanting to quit the business.
3. Ask them about the brands, packaging, what sells and what doesn't if they hold stock they will know.
4. Do a couple of test orders and see how quick they go out to your customers.
Four simple things you can do to avoid Bogus Wholesalers/Dropshippers, now you need to decide what business model you want, either to hold stock or not.
The benefits of Holding stock
You are in control of your business
If you hold stock and sell it, you know you can deliver it.
Downsides of holding stock
Intial outlay to get stock

Credit Crunch Hits The Wholesale Lingerie Business
Since the begining of the year and the start of the credit crunch we have seen many well known and respected wholesalers collapse as the recession and the credit crunch bite deeper. So far this year we have seen Appollo, Linger, and recently Gotlingerie go into adminstration.
It is a worrying trend for everyone in the industry, and companies that only a year ago were doing great are now having to hold back, just in case things don't improve. This has a knock on effect to the Brands as now it is getting even harder to find reliable sources, who act in a proffessional way.
What worries me is that there are now quite a few unknowns proclaiming to be genuine wholesalers who either have no track record of wholesale, or other unreliable wholesalers who are taking advantage of the turmoil in the industry.
As a wholesaler with genuine brands, we offer our products at the best prices available. We never make any claims that are not true, and we are not in competition with our retailers. I.E we don't offer our goods for retail at prices our customers cannot match. I know that there are wholesalers out there in the UK that not only have a wholesale site but operate retail stores themselves where they can stack the odds in their favour. This is both unfair to their customers, and a conflict of interest. Although we do have a retail outlet you will never find our prices lower than our wholesale price.
Finding the right wholesaler can be a tricky business, a good wholesaler never competes for retail with his customers, a good wholesaler should hold stock, a good wholesaler works with their customers to build a better future for everyone and tries to promote their brands in the best light possible. A good wholesaler never spends all their time in forums saying how great they are.
The brands have had a big shock with the collapse of some of their distibutors, as they had no idea there was a problem until it was too late, perhaps if there had been better communication from the distributor then something could have been achieved to save it.
We at DGTG Wholesale believe in customer service and building a working partnership with our customers, we don't advertise in magazines or in the media, we don't spend our time chasing awards. We spend our time trying to provide our customers with the products they want, answering their questions and working with them to provide a better future for us all.
With the future so uncertain at the moment, only those that work with their customers and who provide quality of service and value for money will survive. There are a number of quality wholesalers here in the UK and I am glad to say we are one of the elite few.

At this time with the demise of Gotlingerie we are taking orders for Hustler, and we already have a small stock holding. This is a temporary measure until Hustler have found a new distributor for the UK. We have good relationship with this brand and order each friday with delivery usually arriving within 14 days.
